    The Colour and Light in the Ocean (CLEO) Workshop, organized by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) was held on the ESRIN, the ESA Centre for Earth Observations, at Frascati, Italy on 6-8 September 2016. The workshop is sponsored through selected SEOM (Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions) projects, including: Pools of Carbon in the Ocean (POCO), Photosynthetically Active Radiation and Primary Production (PPP), Synergistic Exploitation of Hyper- and Multispectral Sentinel-Measurements to Determine Phytoplankton Functional Types (PFT) (SynSenPFT), and Extreme Case-2 Waters (C2X). Additional partner projects of ESA are: Marine Photosynthesis Parameters from Space (MAPPS), a Pathfinder STSE (Support to Science Element) project; and Ocean Colour Climate Change Initiative (OC-CCI) through the CCI (Climate Change Initiative). The objectives of the workshop were to: Evaluate state-of-art Exchange information with other relevant projects and activities Bring together remote sensing community, in situ data providers, modellers and other users Explore applications in marine ecosystem models Plan for the future: Identify challenge areas and research priorities for future EO data exploitation activities Discuss key science issues and make recommendations to strengthen community engagement Shape ideas for potential new ocean-colour products to be developed in the era of the Sentinel-3 mission The workshop was organized in five themes, developed around the activities of the sponsoring projects. Each t heme had oral, poster and discussion sessions. The workshop attracted some 160 registered participants. The workshop served an important need to connect the community, to provide a forum for lively exchange of ideas, and to recommend priorities for future activities in a collective manner. The workshop brought together scientists working on development of novel products from ocean-colour data and the user community, including, notably, the modeling community. One of the key outputs of the workshop is this report, which provides the Scientific Roadmap for future activities. Another planned outcome is a Special Issue on Colour and Light in the Oceans, to be published in the Journal, which will highlight the major scientific results presented at the workshop. Each section of the report, dealing with one of the themes of the workshop, is self-contained, but cross-references to other sections are provided where appropriate. Some recommendations found common resonance across sections, such as the need for continuous, consistent, ocean-colour data streams from satellites for long-term monitoring of the marine ecosystem; the need for an integrated approach, bringing together the remote-sensing community, the in situ data providers and the modeling community; the need to promote development of novel products and advanced sensors; and the importance of providing high-quality and uninterrupted support to the user community, through easy and free access to data and products. Each section discusses the current state of the art, identifies user requirements and gaps, and priorities for research in the short and medium terms. The workshop served the important function of sounding the community’s aspirations, and presenting them in a concise manner for ESA, through this Scientific Roadmap. One of the recommendations from the participants was that CLEO workshops be organized on a regular basis in the future, to develop the ocean-colour community , to promote exchange of new results and ideas, and to plan future activities.     ESTS guidelines for preoperative lymph node staging for non-small cell lung cancer

    Accurate preoperative staging and restaging of mediastinal lymph nodes in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is of paramount importance. It will guide choices of treatment and determine prognosis and outcome. Over the last years, different techniques have become available. They vary in accuracy and procedure-related morbidity. The Council of the ESTS initiated a workshop on preoperative mediastinal lymph node staging. This resulted in guidelines for primary staging and restaging. For primary staging, mediastinoscopy remains the gold standard for the superior mediastinal lymph nodes. Invasive procedures can be omitted in patients with peripheral tumors and negative mediastinal positron emission tomography (PET) images. However, in case of central tumors, PET hilar N1 disease, low fluorodeoxyglucose uptake of the primary tumor and LNs≥16mm on CT scan, invasive staging remains indicated. PET positive mediastinal findings should always be cyto-histologically confirmed. Transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA), ultrasound-guided bronchoscopy with fine needle aspiration (EBUS-FNA) and endoscopic esophageal ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) are new techniques that provide cyto-histological diagnosis and are minimally invasive. Their specificity is high but the negative predictive value is low. Because of this, if they yield negative results, an invasive surgical technique is indicated. However, if fine needle aspiration is positive, this result may be valid as proof for N2 or N3 disease. For restaging, invasive techniques providing cyto-histological information are advisable despite the encouraging results supported with the use of PET/CT imaging. Both endoscopic techniques and surgical procedures are available. If they yield a positive result, non-surgical treatment is indicated in most patient

    HARPS3 for a Roboticized Isaac Newton Telescope

    We present a description of a new instrument development, HARPS3, planned to be installed on an upgraded and roboticized Isaac Newton Telescope by end-2018. HARPS3 will be a high resolution (R = 115,000) echelle spectrograph with a wavelength range from 380-690 nm. It is being built as part of the Terra Hunting Experiment - a future 10 year radial velocity measurement programme to discover Earth-like exoplanets. The instrument design is based on the successful HARPS spectrograph on the 3.6m ESO telescope and HARPS-N on the TNG telescope. The main changes to the design in HARPS3 will be: a customised fibre adapter at the Cassegrain focus providing a stabilised beam feed and on-sky fibre diameter ~ 1.4 arcsec, the implementation of a new continuous flow cryostat to keep the CCD temperature very stable, detailed characterisation of the HARPS3 CCD to map the effective pixel positions and thus provide an improved accuracy wavelength solution, an optimised integrated polarimeter and the instrument integrated into a robotic operation. The robotic operation will optimise our programme which requires our target stars to be measured on a nightly basis.     Revised ESTS guidelines for preoperative mediastinal lymph node staging for non-small-cell lung cancer†

    Accurate preoperative staging and restaging of mediastinal lymph nodes in patients with potentially resectable non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is of paramount importance. In 2007, the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS) published an algorithm on preoperative mediastinal staging integrating imaging, endoscopic and surgical techniques. In 2009, the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) introduced a new lymph node map. Some changes in this map have an important impact on mediastinal staging. Moreover, more evidence of the different mediastinal staging technique has become available. Therefore, a revision of the ESTS guidelines was needed. In case of computed tomography (CT)-enlarged or positron emission tomography (PET)-positive mediastinal lymph nodes, tissue confirmation is indicated. Endosonography [endobronchial ultrasonography (EBUS)/esophageal ultrasonography (EUS)] with fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is the first choice (when available), since it is minimally invasive and has a high sensitivity to rule in mediastinal nodal disease. If negative, surgical staging with nodal dissection or biopsy is indicated. Video-assisted mediastinoscopy is preferred to mediastinoscopy. The combined use of endoscopic staging and surgical staging results in the highest accuracy. When there are no enlarged lymph nodes on CT and when there is no uptake in lymph nodes on PET or PET-CT, direct surgical resection with systematic nodal dissection is indicated for tumours ≤3 cm located in the outer third of the lung. In central tumours or N1 nodes, preoperative mediastinal staging is indicated. The choice between endoscopic staging with EBUS/EUS and FNA or video-assisted mediastinoscopy depends on local expertise to adhere to minimal requirements for staging. For tumours >3 cm, preoperative mediastinal staging is advised, mainly in adenocarcinoma with high standardized uptake value. For restaging, invasive techniques providing histological information are advisable. Both endoscopic techniques and surgical procedures are available, but their negative predictive value is lower compared with the results obtained in baseline staging.
